Founded by Kai Schubert in October 1998, with Kai being a graduate from the German Viticulture and Oenology University in Geisenheim, the estate is operated with his partner Marion Deimling.

Both are German and had been looking for an ideal area to grow premium Pinot Noir for quite a while with Kai finally acquiring a small, established vineyard in Martinborough and about 40 hectares of bare land just north of Martinborough, at Dakins Road.

The land at Dakins Road was developed with high density planting started in spring 1999 and now 12 hectares are under vines with 90% planted with red varieties of which importantly the majority being planted in 8 different clones of Pinot Noir.

In the winery… the emphasis is on keeping the quality that comes with the grapes from the vineyards. This means gentle processing in all vinification processes and starts with the way of picking the grapes. All fruit is carefully selected and picked by hand and then collected in a small, perforated basket which is important if the grapes are travelling therefore any squeezing and damaging of the grapes is avoided when transported to the winery in Greytown, where the next step of vinification takes place.

2009 Sauvignon Blanc $24.99
This wine was partially whole bunch pressed with maceration on skins then fermented in different bins under influences of various yeasts and temperatures. Racking by gravity to keep maximum freshness gives a complex, crisp and zesty wine with lively fruit notes of citrus and subtle tropical fruit..
2008 Pinot Noir "Block B " $59.99
Block B is a selection of the Dijon Pinot Noir Clones; specifically the clones 115, 667, 777, 114 and 113 that were hand-picked and careful selected bunches of grapes, which were 100% de-stemmed, cold-macerated, fermented in stainless steel vats and left on “skins” for 3 weeks. Aged in 50% new and 50% used French oak barriques for 14 months, this is again a complex wine that is full bodied with firm tannins, spice, black fruit, dark chocolate and savoury notes..
